This study was conducted to identify and limit the sensitive factors for the fire resistance performance of nuclear safety-related SC structures, in which steel plates that function as reinforcing bars of RC structures must be directly exposed to fire without fire resistance coating. In fire condition, the surface steel plate of steel plate concrete (SC) wall is directly exposed to fire attacks, therefore the load-bearing capacity of the wall is reduced due to the deterioration of material properties and loss of cross-section. Although the reduction of stiffness and strength are expected, a minimum fire resistance rating of three hours according to Standard Review Plant 9.5.1 should be required for steel plate wall applied in the NPPs safety-related structures. In this study, for evaluating the load-bearing capacities of steel plate concrete structure under fire condition, fire resistance performance evaluation tests on wall without penetration and wall with penetrations are conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, ASTM E814, and ISO 834 standards and procedures. Among the factors affecting the load-bearing capacity of the SC structure under fire condition, the effect of axial load on the fire resistance performance of the structure exposed to fire is assessed, and the ratio of axial load to nominal axial strength of SC members to secure 3-hour fire resistance performance is presented as less than 40%.
