The 1915 Canakkale suspension bridge has the world's longest main span (2023 m) and the tallest steel towers (313.5m above M.S.L.). Due to the need for the rapid construction of steel towers and their susceptibility to vibration during the construction phase, it was necessary to verify structural safety, fatigue performance, and workability during welding against potential vibrations. In particular, in the case of vortex-induced vibration (VIV), the resonance wind speed decreases as the tower erection progresses. Such characteristics of low wind speed vibration may produce an adverse impact on fatigue performance, considering the cumulative fatigue damage ratio during erection, and welding workability during the steel tower's construction. Consequently, the required damping ratio was calculated, taking into account the vibration characteristics at each stage of construction. Based on this, a design and operation plan for the Active Mass Damper (AMD) was executed to facilitate continuous vibration control throughout the construction process. Through the vibration control engineering using AMD, the steel tower was rapidly erected within the 10 months and the amplitude of the steel tower due to VIV was controlled to be under the required Peak Acceleration.
